Developing Literacy Through Music

Presenters: Robyn Trinick and Maria Winder

Refresh your literacy programme with music.  Maria and Robyn will explore resources and ideas for using music to develop reading, writing and speaking skills in your classroom.  This workshop will enthuse generalist teachers at all primary school levels.  Books, song lyrics and examples of children’s writing will be used to show the potential for music to strengthen language skills.


Robyn Trinick has been involved in tertiary music education for the past twenty years, focusing mostly on the primary sector.  She has a particular interest in the connection between music and language and her current Masters thesis explores outcomes for literacy through music.

Enviromusic for Teachers

Presenters: Anna Rugis and Maria Winder

Be inspired to experience the joy of music and performing within the context of education for sustainability.  Maria will introduce practical ideas for teaching songs and environmental themes in the classroom, using the original music of Anna Rugis.  Anna herself will then guide workshop participants to develop learning ideas with children and prepare musical performances of her works.  Learn how to make a musical performance come alive while teaching students about sustainability and caring for their environment.  Participants will learn about costume making, set building, staging and performance techniques, culminating in the experience of an informal performance.


Anna Rugis is a singer/songwritier, composer , producer and writier.  her life in music has included writing and producing 6 CDs of songs and musicals on environmental themes for children www.enviromusic.co.nz as well as other CDs of original music music for adults.  She is a former backup singer for Van Morrison, Cat Stevens, Cliff Richard and the Kinks and is surrnetly performing ina production of Chanson, a music play that she wrote and produced.

Beginner Ukulele for Teachers

Presenter: Maria Winder

Within the first few minutes of this workshop, you’ll be playing ukulele, even if you’ve never played before.  Learn to play basic chords, pick simple tunes, try a variety of strumming techniques and read ukulele tablature.  Explore teaching strategies that ensure success and enjoy being a musician.

Celia Stewart runs her own music education consultancy, Tune into Music, providing professional development for teachers and supporting schools in their music programmes.  She is an on-line facilitator for Arts Online and teachers flute, recorder and marimba in Christchurch schools.  She has been involved in music education for many years as a primary and early childhood teacher, flute and recorder teacher, lecturer in Early Childhood, primary music adviser in Canterbury and National Facilitator in Primary Music.  Celia is particularly passionate about recorder ad tuned percussion in schools and is currently doing a Masters degree in Orff Schulwerk through Waikato University.
